The Detail

Why rowing works, and why most people do it wrong

The rowing machine is the most misused piece of equipment in most gyms. Done properly it is one of the best full-body conditioning tools there is. Done badly it is an arm exercise that hurts your lower back. Row & Glow is a coached class, so you learn the stroke correctly from the beginning.

The stroke

Power comes from the legs, transfers through the hips, and finishes with the back and arms. Get that sequence right and you recruit most of the body in one movement while driving your heart rate up. We teach the sequence, then we build sessions on top of it.

Low impact, high return

Nothing pounds through your joints, which makes rowing a genuine option for members who find running uncomfortable or are working around a knee, hip or ankle issue. Tell us beforehand and we’ll set your machine up and adjust the intervals accordingly.

Interval-based, never a slog

Sessions are structured around intervals rather than one long grind. The work is hard in short bursts, the time passes quickly, and there’s a measurable number on the screen at the end, which most people find far more motivating than they expected.

Who it suits

Complete beginners, members wanting to add conditioning alongside their strength work, and anyone who has written off cardio as boring. Classes run at our Park Farm studio in Redditch, easily reached from Bromsgrove, Alvechurch and Studley.

I'm a retired guy who's never been a fan of gyms, but working with Adam Turner at Seal Personal Training has completely changed my perspective. From the moment I walked in, Adam made me feel right at home.
FAQs

Rowing questions

I’ve never used a rowing machine. Can I still come?

That’s exactly who the class is for. Rowing technique is easy to get wrong on your own, so we coach it from the first stroke. Most people who end up loving rowing started here having never touched an erg.

How long is a Row & Glow class?

Sessions are built around intervals rather than one long slog, which keeps the intensity high and the time passing quickly. Get in touch for the current class timetable.

Is rowing suitable if I have joint problems?

Rowing is low impact, which is why it suits people who find running uncomfortable. Tell us about any injuries or joint issues beforehand and we’ll adjust the session and your setup accordingly.

Is it a full-body workout?

Yes. A rowing stroke drives from the legs through the hips and finishes with the back and arms, so you train most of the body at once while also getting a serious cardiovascular session.
